  1. The term breeding is used in biology, and is
  2. the crossing and selection of animals and 
  3. plants to change the characteristics of an
  4. existing breed or variety, or to produce a
  5. new one. Cattle may be bred for increased 
  6. meat or milk yield, sheep for thicker or 
  7. finer wool, and horses for speed or stamina. 
  8. Plants, such as wheat or maize, may be bred 
  9. for disease resistance, heavier and more 
  10. rapid cropping, and hardiness to adverse 
  11. weather.
